The security forces thwarted a second terrorist attack on a border control point in Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in one week, police officials announced on Saturday.

About 15 to 20 heavily armed terrorists launched an assault before dawn at the Lakhani control point, using rocket launchers and other heavy weapons, according to a Punjab police spokesman, Express News reported.

The attackers approached the position in small groups from several directions but were detected by thermal imaging cameras.

The alert staff responded immediately with machine guns and mortar fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw.

“There are reports of important militant victims, although the exact figures are not confirmed,” added the police spokesman.

Six days earlier, a similar attack on the same checkpoint was postponed.

The operation was managed by the regional police officer Dera Ghazi Khan Captain (RETD) Sajjad Hassan Khan, with district police rescue quickly strengthening the position.

Inspector General of Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, congratulated the forces for their rapid action to prevent the attack. So far, the police have rejected 19 similar assaults on border control points.
