- Renault UK suffers from cyber attacks exhibiting customer data; Passwords and bank details are not affected
- The victims include buyers and participants in the competition; Renault urges caution with urgent or suspicious communications
- The attack follows violations similar to Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo, linked to known groups of threat actors
Renault has become the last major adult to undergo a cyber attack and a data violation.
The British arm of the French car manufacturer has issued a warning to its customers, noting that sensitive personal data may have been stolen and urging customers to be vigilant of incomplete incommented communications, in particular those claiming to come from Renault, as well as those which bear an unhealthy emergency dose.
We do not know who are the actors of the threat, or if it was a ransomware attack, as was the case with Jaguar Land Rover. We know that the disbelievers stole the comprehensive names of people, postal addresses, birth dates, sexes, telephone numbers and vehicle identification numbers. In some cases, vehicle recording details may also have been accessible. The passwords and the bank data remained secure, it was said.
Unknown identity
“We are in the process of contacting all affected customers, advisor to the cyber attack and to remind them of being careful of any unlined request for personal information,” said a Renault spokesperson.
“We want to apologize to all affected customers. The confidentiality of the data is of the utmost importance for us and we deeply regret that this has happened ”.
The automaker has not declared how many customers have been affected, but stressed that in addition to real buyers, people who participated in shared competitions or personal information in other ways are also in danger.
There has been a series of cyber attacks against car manufacturers recently. Jaguar Land Rover underwent a very disruptive attack which forced the company to close several facilities for months, to tackle the consequences.
Volvo, on the other hand, lost personnel data after a supply chain attack against one of its computer suppliers.
JLR would have been struck by dispersed slip hunters, while Volvo’s attack came gracked Datacarry.
