Ron Washington of Angels has sidelined for the season with a health problem at 73

The Los Angeles Angels have announced that manager Ron Washington would remain on medical leave for the rest of the 2025 season with an undeveloped medical problem.

Washington, 73, was sidelined for the last week after having expressed breath at the end of the Angels series against New York Yankees which ended on June 19.

After this series, Washington returned to South California and was put on medical leave after having undergone a series of tests. Washington is currently the oldest manager in MLB.

“We are starting to see the personality of the team taking the personality of (Ron Washington),” said the director general of angels, Perry Minasian, in a statement. “There is a certain resilience, there is a certain tenacity, and that is exactly what Ron is.

“(The players) will go there and play as loudly as they play for Ron, day after day.”

The coach of the angels Ray Montgomery, who filled Washington when he was initially put on medical leave, was appointed interim director.

Washington was hired by the Angels before the 2024 season and is 103-140 in 243 games with the team. He was director of the Texas Rangers for eight seasons (2007-2014) and had a record of 664-611 with them.

He led the Rangers to consecutive appearances of the World Series in 2010 and 2011 before resigning suddenly in September 2014.

The angels are 40-41 in the season and have a 7-4 file with Montgomery at the helm.

This is the first time of Montgomery as a manager of the MLB in his coach career. He joined the Angels as Director of Player Staff for the 2020 season and became the team’s benches coach in 2021.

The Angels lost 15-9 against the Washington Nationals on Friday and will try to bounce back when they play the Nationals in the second match of their three-game series at 9:38 p.m. on Saturday.
