Rory McILroy remembers when he knew he was “ bad ” about the Ryder Cup

A year before making his debut at the Ryder Cup, Rory McILroy described the “exhibition” tournament for which he “would not run the punch”.

Well, he did a lot more than the fist pump. In 2016, each putt was as if he had marked a touchdown, and five years later, tears sank in the middle of a brutal loss in the whistling strait.

McILroy reiterated to journalists on Thursday that he will always be “the most proud of my individual achievements in the game”, but in this famous emotional plea in 2021, he said that he had never been moved about personal achievements (that is to say until the masters of this year).

It was a fairly 180 -degree turn for McILroy, and he saw when he admitted that he was “wrong”.

And it didn’t take him too long to realize.

“I think it’s more behind the scenes. The team’s room, the team speaks. I think for myself, entering as a full recruit – look, I looked at the Ryder Cups grow. I cried whenever America won Brookline. As it was not as if I didn’t feel something when I looked at Ryder Cups,” said McILroy.

“I entered this team room at Celtic Manor and I just saw how much it meant for everyone. I have somehow started, I said to myself, maybe I was wrong … I remember Seve [Ballesteros] was sick, and we had it on one of these things of conference calls at the time. He speaks to the team and we are all in the team room. It’s Wednesday or Thursday evening. And I look around and the majority of the team cry while Seve talks to us.

The European Ryder Cup player did not impress by Trump’s attendance: “Just another spectator”

“And I’m like, that’s all. This is the embodiment of what the European team of the Ryder Cup is. I think it was the time, this conference call with Seve in 2010, it was time for me.”

Ballesteros played a key role in what the Ryder Cup is today. The tournament was initially between the United States and Great Britain / Ireland, but it extended to include all of Europe in 1979, which makes Ballesteros and other legends of eligible golf.

Ballesteros died less than a year after this Ryder Cup 2010, and Europe kept the cup with a return on spectacular Sunday in 2012 in Medinah, the first since the death of Spanish.

Oh, and these pink purns shirts carried by the Europeans during this return? They made their return Thursday.

“It’s good,” said McILroy. “It’s nice.”
