- MSI has listed an RTX 5080 24 GB model on its website
- This is not the first time that MSI has referred to a higher capacity card
- Some claim that it is a mistake, others a sign of things to come
MSI has teased an RTX 5080 model with 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM (up to the 16 standard) of the 80 classes on its website.
Spotted by Tweaktown, a compatibility list of the Wi-Fi X870 Tomahawk motherboard from MSI presents support for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 model with “24576” under the size of the memory.
Before the launch date of the RTX 5080 on January 30, 2025, we previously covered rumors that an RTX 5080 24 GB version could be “incoming” because the Samsung GDDR7 memory modules are shipped in 2 GB (with configurations of 3 GB in progress). This is part of the reason why the RTX 5090 has 32 GB GDDR7 (increasing compared to the 24 GB GDDR6X of RTX 4090).
This source also notes a previous opportunity when MSI presented a Vanguard RTX 5080 variant with 24 GB GDDR7 in a promotional video, with the alleged memory pool seen on the packaging. However, this has been calm (apart from rumors and speculation since then) so far.
It may be an error in the MSI part, but it also shows that the 80 classes card could include double the VRAM available. Interestingly, the list does not include the standard 16 GB version in the specifications sheet, so that the company could have listed a reserved amount of space based on pre-liberated information rather than retail figures.
That said, this is not the first time that we have seen different capacities of Pool of Graphics Cards, as with the original launch window for the RTX 4080 12 GB of the then (which later became the RTX 4070 TI). Likewise, the RTX 4060 TI exists in the 8 GB and 16 GB configurations, proving that two versions of the same GPU can succeed on the market without confusing consumers.
A sign of things to come for the map of 80 classes?
Whether the RTX 5080 24 GB list is a real error or not, the possibility of having two options on the market is only a good thing for people because you will have the option of two different GPUs, with a last potential more “time” time for 4K games, because discharges require more true than what we generally see.
Some players have expressed their disappointment in the RTX 5080 having the same memory pool as the RTX 4080 (despite the GDDR6x jumping jump and visible bandwidth differences). This was seen with the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 TI, both with the same respective memory pools of 12 GB and 16 GB as their previous generation counterparts.
After several months of speculation around an improved RTX 5080 24 GB version, we can see it surface, or it could remain a little more than a possibility, referring to the next generation instead. If it is released, it could be half between it and the RTX 5090, which is logical given the difference of $ 1,000 of PDSF between the two; If we were to speculate on potential prices, $ 1,200 (corresponding to the original RTX 4080) seems more likely.
