Russia plans to ban Google Meet in the context of a broader repression of foreign technology, according to Moscow times Reports.
Roskomnadzor, the Russian federal agency responsible for the country’s media, has already banned voice and video calls via WhatsApp and Telegram, and the country should extend restrictions even more.
Users looking for alternatives, Google is quickly encountered have become one of the most popular alternatives – the one that Roskomnadzor is also looking to prohibit.

Google Reeping recently faced generalized disturbances, with more than 2,000 individual reports complaining of frozen calls, missing videos / audio and unexpected closings, but Roskomnadzor has publicly denied any involvement.
“People began to experiment with other platforms after blocked calls in WhatsApp and Telegram, apparently, overloads have led to certain failures,” said the vice-president of the State Duma Commission on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Abzates.
“Roskomnadzor did not take any measures to restrict the operation of the Google Meet video conference service in Russia, said the agency’s press in Interfax,” wrote the Interfax news agency in a telegram position (translated).
The post also described Meta as “extremist”, connecting WhatsApp to fraud, sabotage and terrorism. WhatsApp had more than 97 million users in Russia in July 2025 PK Press Club.
“However, applications that can monitor our citizens, transfer information to Western special services, may well be blocked,” added Svintsov.
Industry analysts expect an imminent google meet ban to bind to promoting Max Russia, a state -supported application that will be preinstalled on all new September smartphones, based on WeChat China.
Max, who is still in the test phase, has already raised around 18 million users.
