- The deposit system of the American Federal Court recently underwent a cyber attack
- The first reports claim that Russia is at least partially to blame
- The attack targeted sealed files
Russia was reportedly linked to a recent recent cyber attack against the depot system of the American Federal Court.
Report of the New York Times (NYT), who said he spoke to people familiar with the issue, says there is evidence that Russia is at least partially responsible for the attack, which has been an effort “for several years” to violate the system.
The reports added research: “Includes intermediate level criminal cases in the New York region and several other jurisdictions, with certain cases involving people with Russian and Eastern family names.”
Hacking of sealed files
A cyber attack against the system was recently confirmed on August 7 by the administrative office of the American courts. However, Politico said the system has been attacked by an actor unknown to threats since early July.
In addition, through the United States, chief judges of the district courts were invited to move affairs with links abroad outside the regular document management system.
An internal memo, seen by the NYT and issued to the officials of the Ministry of Justice, to the committee and to the chief judges of the federal courts by administrators with the judicial system, declared that “the actors of persistent and sophisticated cyber-menices recently compromised the sealed files”, continuing: “This remains an urgent case which requires immediate action”.
The Federal Court deposit system, as many deposit systems, is a sprawling network that is permanently and updated with new records, and was built on a system developed for the first time in 1996.
Consequently, the system is considered to have several serious vulnerabilities, the system being previously violated in 2020.
There is still no reason known for the attack, but it is possible that if the Russian intelligence services are involved, they could collect information on the potential compromise of assets in the United States.
The same thing was theorized on telecommunications violations that hit the United States in 2024, which was allocated to China. In these attacks, the threats of the threat violated a stolen door used by the police to pursue listening to telephone ordered by the court.
