Athletics was far from being the only Baseball team in Sacramento, California, receiving criticism at the start of the season.

The organization of minor leagues in town generated heat last week.

Sacramento River cats had to participate in a recent tradition of minor leagues – by changing their team for a period of time to promote their alternative. For example, the Patriots of Somerset played as jersey dinners, and the Ironpigs of Lehigh Valley should compete as a tomato pie from Lehigh Valley, to name only a few.

The River Cats were to play under the name of Sacramento Gold Diggers, apparently a return to the gold rush from California. The city of Sacramento was a paradise for gold minors in the late 1840s and was transformed into a prosperous community and incorporated into California in 1850.

“Inspired by the regional history of the California gold rush, this new identity offers a link with the significant impact of this era when Sacramento grew up as a big city closest to the Golden Fields,” the team said in a press release Thursday, via the Sacramento bee.

The team published a video presenting the name of the team, but also relied on an old trope because it showed two women with signs in dollars on their eyes when they saw a player.

The video, which has since been removed from the team’s social media pages, has caused indignation and the organization has denied its decision on the name.

The chronicler of Sacramento Bee, Robin Epley, has torn the rebranding as a “misogynist joke on women”.

More people reacted on X.

“Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity has clearly missed the brand,” the team said in a statement. “Our intention was to creatively reference the rich story of Sacramento and Gold Country, but our approach was wrong, and we are sorry for the error. We will no longer use this identity.”
