- OpenAI is hiring a Readiness Manager and we know the salary will be $555,000 plus equity.
- 2025 saw a ‘glimpse’ of how AI models may affect mental health
- The role promises to be very stressful, so think twice before applying
Sam Altman said OpenAI was looking for a new head of preparedness, citing the rapid improvement of its tools, AI models and emerging risks.
The ChatGPT creator is offering a salary of $555,000 plus equity to one lucky person, but CEO Altman warned that the “head of prep” position would be a very stressful role.
The key to the role is understanding how advanced models could be abused, guiding security decisions, and securing OpenAI systems to mitigate risk.
OpenAI is hiring a Readiness Manager
Altman said in his post that OpenAI saw a “preview” of mental health impacts linked to the model in 2025, apparently recognizing a number of deaths linked to ChatGPT interactions. OpenAI previously rolled back a GPT-4o update after admitting it could increase harmful user behavior.
“We are entering a world where we need a more nuanced understanding and measurement of how these capabilities could be misused, and how we can limit these harms both in our products and in the world, so that we can all reap the enormous benefits,” he wrote.
The soon-to-be-appointed chief will lead a “small [but] “high impact team”, adhering to the OpenAI readiness framework.
Aleksander Madry previously held this position, but was reassigned by OpenAI. Later, Joaquín Quiñonero Candela held this position, but Candela is now responsible for recruitment. Lilian Weng was also responsible for preparation for a while.
“It will be a stressful job and you will dive into the deep end almost immediately,” Altman warned.
The company has previously been criticized by former employees for prioritizing business opportunities and AGI goals, but Altman’s latest move for a chief readiness officer combined with a healthy salary package could mark a significant shift.
