- The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy could obtain a variable opening function on its main camera
- Such a characteristic has been seen for the last time on the Galaxy S9 and can be found on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra
- This could be a real advantage for the next ultra-standard phone given the size of the main camera sensor that it could use
Rather than taking a look at what Apple does, Samsung could draw inspiration from Huawei and Xiaomi and offer a variable opening on the main camera of the Ultra Galaxy S26.
This tip comes from the reasonably reliable Ice Tipster universe, which, when publication on the Chinese social media site Weibo said that the ability to physically switch between the openings would return to the main rear camera of the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Such a feature was seen for the last time on the Galaxy S9, which could switch between F / 1.5 and F / 2.4 to adjust the opening of the lens according to the lighting conditions.
The idea was that the wider opening (f / 1/5) was used to let more light strike the camera sensor when the lighting conditions were darker to the detriment of sharper photos with a deeper depth of field, while the higher (and smaller) opening was used in brighter conditions where there was a lot of light striking the sensor and allowed more moving depth.
It was a neat feature, but on phones with smaller sensors, it was undoubtedly a little theoretical, because there is generally a greater depth of field on smartphones given the small size of a main camera sensor compared to the size of the lens and its large focal distance.
A potentially exciting upgrade
However, it would be a way to upgrade the 200 megapixel main camera found on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. And since ultra recent models in the S series Galaxy have larger sensors than many older galaxy phones, greater opening control could be more visible.
It would also give the camera another physical function to help shape the photos it produces, and signify that the new generation ultra may not be as dependent on the algorithmic image processing.
Ice Universe did not note the opening that the Galaxy S26 Ultra could use, and such a functionality would not be unique on the phone, because the Xiaomi 14 Ultra has several variable openings on its main camera, and the Huawei Mate 50 Pro also has a main camera with a variable opening of F / 1.4 and F / 4. In our Xiaomi 14 Ultra Review, the Tester Paul Hatton The camera of the phone and its openings, so it seems that Samsung would be intelligent.
The reverse is that such a feature could be more a way to market the phone than to give transformer results, especially since Samsung is already one of the best cameras on the camera.
Time will tell us if this rumor bears fruit, but it is the one that attracted my attention and could inject a little more creativity into a range of Samsung phones which has become too iterative, in my opinion.
