CES is the time when many tech companies announce or launch their latest and greatest products – but sometimes what’s shown isn’t as new as it seems.
A good example of this is SanDisk’s new Creator line of storage products, announced at CES 2025. If you’re a creator or aspire to be one, you’ll probably be very interested in these, as they’re clearly geared toward your needs – however, “caveat emptor” as the Romans said – buyer beware.
Indeed, the bright blue 8TB SanDisk Creator Desk Drive, priced at $629.99, looks great and promises 1,000MB/s sequential reads. But so does the SanDisk Desk Drive, which has a very similar model number, doesn’t include the word “Creator” in its name and isn’t blue, but is cheaper at $549.99 – a savings not to be missed neglect. $80.
Pay extra for color
Perhaps you are considering purchasing a microSDXC card. SanDisk has you covered here, too.
Its new 1TB microSD Creator card (in blue!) is designed for use in slotted Android phones and tablets, drones, action cameras and digital cameras, including standard compact cameras, digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) and mirrorless cameras. Models (MIL): All devices a creator can use. Plus, it’s temperature, humidity, drop, and water resistant, which is important if you’re on the go.
A steal at $159.99 – or… you can buy the SanDisk Extreme 1TB microSDXC card instead. Of course, it doesn’t specifically list which devices you can use it on, but it’s essentially the same product and $67 cheaper at $92.99.
Maybe you want a portable SSD, like the SanDisk Creator Pro? Available in – you guessed it – a pretty blue color, it offers up to 4TB of capacity and read speeds of up to 2,000MB/s, allowing you to back up and access your content with the performance of the NVMe SSD. Good value at $349.99, right? Unless you don’t mind the color, in which case you can buy the extremely similar SanDisk Extreme PRO (reviewed here) for $299.99 and save $50 – enough to buy blue paint if you really want to match.
Or perhaps you’d like to purchase the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD (see below), available in 1TB or 2TB capacities, designed to produce content on the go by connecting it to any MagSafe compatible smartphone. This is priceless at the moment because, unlike other SanDisk Creator branded storage, this is actually a new product and one that looks really useful.
We can’t blame SanDisk for rebranding old products to appeal to the creator market – it’s a smart business move. But unless you’re particularly attached to the blue color, you can get a decent savings by purchasing the non-Creator versions instead.
