Online fundraising platform Kickstarter has removed a campaign for a book about Save Women’s Sports activists, which was expected to include interviews with Riley Gaines, Jennifer Sey, Paula Scanlan, Brooke Slusser, Payton McNabb, Stephanie Turner, Selina Soule, Kaitlynn Wheeler and several others.

The campaign page for Arwen Becker’s upcoming title “She Handled It” currently says “suspended” on the Kickstarter website.

Becker told PK Press Club Digital that he was told that campaigns are suspended when the platform discovers “strong evidence” that a campaign violates “the spirit of the Kickstarter rules.”

Becker added that one of the potential reasons given by Kickstarter for the suspension was “This is hateful or offensive content that does not meet Kickstarter’s spirit of inclusiveness by promoting discrimination, bigotry, or intolerance toward marginalized groups.”

PK Press Club Digital has contacted Kickstarter for comment.

Becker has since moved the campaign to Christian digital fundraising platform GiveSendGo, famous for hosting fundraisers that are not allowed on other platforms.

Becker says the recent removal of his campaign and the viral reaction it received actually helped bring more attention to his project.

“It really helped. There’s no doubt about it,” Becker said. “There are people who are really upset about what happened, so of course it gets attention because it’s so absurd!”

She added that she made no effort to contact Kickstarter after her campaign was suspended.

“I don’t have time to fight with a company that treats authors/creators this way, so I immediately switched to another way to fund the campaign,” Becker said.
