SCBA, the newspapers call to repeal PECA adjustments

Islamabad:

An advisory meeting held under the auspices of the association of the Supreme Court Bar (SCBA) requested the cancellation of recent modifications made to the country’s cybercrime law – The law on the prevention of electronic crimes (PECA) , 2016.

The meeting entitled “Media under threat: challenges faced by post-Peca media staff (amendment) ACT, 2025” was organized at the SCBA headquarters.

Chaired by the president of SCBA, Rauf Atta, the session attended by members of the bar as well as journalists and media staff. The meeting then adopted unanimous resolutions emphasizing freedom of expression and denouncing recent modifications to PECA.

“This advisory meeting condemns and disapproves of the PECA law (amendment), 2025, being defective legislation, considering that it violated article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of expression and expression .

“This advisory meeting maintains that the law of the PECA (amendment), 2025, undermines the rights of the personnel of the media protected by article 19 of the PICPR, adopted by the United Nations and to which Pakistan is signatory,” said a Communiqué published after the meeting.
