- Seagate Mozaic 4+ platform increases hard drive capacities from 30TB to 44TB
- It is the world’s first and only platform based on HAMR.
- An anonymous hyperscaler is already using it at scale
Data storage giant Seagate has unveiled its next-generation Mozaic 4+ platform, unveiling a range of higher capacities per single hard drive.
Seagate claims that Mozaic 4+ is the industry’s first and only thermally assisted magnetic recording (HAMR)-based storage platform that has been deployed at scale and has been qualified by an unnamed “leading hyperscale cloud provider” in configurations up to 44TB.
And that appears to be just the beginning, with the company looking to move from the current 4TB per drive to 10TB per drive, which would result in capacities of up to 100TB.
Speaking on the growing demand for the global cloud and data center business, CEO Dave Mosley said: “Seagate’s HAMR-based Mozaic products deliver the scalability, performance and efficiency customers need to unlock the full potential of their data.
Although Seagate’s latest generation technology is currently positioned as “critical” for data center infrastructure, training data and historical archives, only time remains between now and this type of high-capacity storage becomes more widely available for consumer and small-scale commercial use.
“Whether it’s large-scale model training or sophisticated tuning, companies building and using these AI models have found that high-capacity hard drive innovations like HAMR have become critical to the quality and speed of their results,” added Bob O’Donnell, president of TECHnalysis Research:
As for the upgraded platform, Seagate claims an infrastructure efficiency improvement of approximately 47% in a 1 exabyte deployment compared to standard 30TB drives, resulting in an approximately 100 square foot reduction in data center footprint. This also means customers can unlock up to 0.8 million kWh of annual energy savings in this example.
The unnamed hyperscaler is already receiving a “volume” of Mozaic 4+ drives and Seagate plans to increase production for wider availability from now on.
