Peshawar:
The elections in the Senate of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly are not surprised on Monday as a prior understanding between the government and the opposition parties held, resulting in the victory of all consensus candidates, according to unofficial results
The KP assembly voted for 11 vacant seats in the upper chamber of the province’s parliament. Originally scheduled for March 2024, the elections were delayed due to a dispute concerning the allocation of reserved seats, which was finally resolved by the Supreme Court last month.
Among those who voted, there were 25 newly sworn legislators in reserved seats. They had taken an oath a day earlier at the Governor’s house after a planned assembly session was postponed due to the lack of quorum.
Before the surveys, the chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur of Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI) has reached a seats sharing arrangement with the opposition parties, notably Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistani (PPP) party and the Jamiat Ulema-Elam-Fazl (JUI-F) contested election.
As part of the agreement, the government agreed to allocate five of the 11 seats to the opposition. However, some candidates supported by KP PTI who presented themselves independently refused to withdraw. While most retired Sunday evening, a PTI hopes, Khurram Zeeshan, remained in the race but received no vote.
According to the unofficial results announced by the provincial electoral commission, Murad Saeed de PTI obtained the 26 highest votes, followed by Faisal Javed, which obtained 22 votes. Mirza Afrida de Pti – The former vice -president of the Senate – and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri collected 21 votes each.
From the opposition, Maulana Attaul Haq Darwesh of Jeu-F, Niaz Ahmed of PML-N and Talha Mahmood of the PPP were elected. Ahmed, son of the leader of PML-N, Amir Muqam, won 18 votes each, while Talha Mahmood obtained 17 votes.
On technocrats and seats for women, Azam Swati and Rubina Naz of PTI were elected. The two obtained 89 votes each. On the opposition side, Dilawar Khan of Jui-F was elected to the headquarters of the technocrats with 54 votes while Rubina Khalid of the PPP was elected to the headquarters of women with 52 votes.
The results were in line with the understanding earlier this month between the government and the opposition. As part of the agreement, the government received four general seats, a technocrat and a woman seats, and the opposition obtained three general seats, a technocrat and a woman.
Earlier, the survey started at 11 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. planned. The voting process was chaired by the commissioner in the provincial elections. A member of the Treasury did not participate in the vote. Consequently, the ballots were deposited by 144 out of 145 legislators.
The survey process went well. The voting time has been extended by an hour and a half. The first vote was expressed by Malik Adnan de Jui-F, while the chief minister Gandapur was the last to vote. Shortly after the results were announced, there was a jubilation among the workers of the respective party.
