Senators denounce the murder of honor while legislators call for justice

Islamabad:

Senators on Monday strongly denounced a brutal incident of a killing of honor in Balutchistan, where a man and a woman were killed.

While debating a motion moved by Senator Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur to underline the need for intervention at the government’s political level to eliminate gender discrimination and promote women’s participation in economic activities, the legislators have condemned practice as “barbaric and inhuman”, affirming that no civilized company can tolerate such atrocities. They demanded rapid and decisive action against the authors and underlined the need for justice.

Senator IRFAN-UL-HAQUE SIDDIQUI has urged the Chamber not only to condemn the barbaric incident, but also to recommend concrete measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He expressed his concern about the apparent inaction of the provincial government, noting that despite the incident which occurred two months earlier, it was only revealed after the circulation of a video on social networks.

He urged his colleagues senators, in particular those of Balutchistan to unite in efforts to dismantle the self-imposed system, where individuals assume the roles of the judge, the jury and the executioner without any legal authority to do so.

He said that the brutal incident had shame the whole nation. However, he stressed that the simple conviction is not enough that the deep causes behind the couple’s illegal murder are approached.

Senator Ali Zafar proposed the formation of a supervisory committee to ensure that the culprits involved in the murder of honor are brought to justice in fifteen.

Among the concerns expressed were senators Sherry Rehman, Khalida Ateeb, Aimal Wali Khan, Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddiqui, Ali Zafar and Samina Mumtaz Zehri.
