Islamabad:
In a break with tradition, the chief judge of Pakistan (CJ), Yahya Afridi, must administer the oath today to the six new judges of the Supreme Court as well as an acting judge during a ceremony which will stand in front of the Supreme Court building.
These judges were appointed Monday at a meeting of the Pakistan Judicial Commission (JCP) which was boycotted by two superior judges of the SC as well as two members of the opposition party.
The permanent judges to take the oath are Hashim Khan Kakar, the chief judge of the high court of Balutchistan (BHC); Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, the chief judge of the High Court of the Sindh (SHC); Ishtiaq Ibrahim, the chief judge of the High Court of Peshawar (PHC) and Aamer Faroo, the chief judge of the High Court of Islamabad (IHC).
SHC SALAHUHUDDIN PANHWAR judge and Phc Shakeel Ahmed judge will also take an oath as judges of the Supreme Court.
The JCP, on February 10, also approved the appointment of judge Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb of the IHC as an acting judge, who will also take an oath today.
In the premises of the Supreme Court, chairs were organized for the chief judge of Pakistan and the seven judges. About 500 to 600 chairs are installed in the courtyard of the Supreme Court.
The decision to hold the oath in an open space was taken by considering the number of guests. The judges, their families and their colleagues will also attend the ceremony.
In addition, President Asif Ali Zardari will prove the oath to the acting chief judge of the IHC, Sarfaraz Dogar.
