Breakup Creator Dan Erickson says he already knows how the hit Apple TV Plus series will end.
Speaking to TechRadar before Breakup During the Season 2 launch, Erickson also confirmed that he “had an idea” of what the final scene of the much-loved series would be. However, even though Erickson also admitted that he had spoken to director and fellow producer Ben Stiller and Apple executives about the “ideal” number of seasons needed to tell BreakupIn the story, he wouldn’t wonder how many would be needed.
Erickson discussed with me the future of the mystery thriller following Stiller’s own comments on the subject. In November 2024, Stiller told Collider that work on a third season was already in its early stages — remarks that all but confirm that another episode is on the way, even if Apple hasn’t officially announced it yet.

Armed with this information, I asked Erickson if Breakup season 3 could be the final entry in the series. And, if he couldn’t tell, if he knew how many seasons it would take to conclude his story and/or if he had already planned out the final scene of the Apple TV Original.
“Yeah,” he replied. “I have an idea of what the final scene will be and, in terms of the number of seasons, that’s kind of where I see everything landing character-wise.

“We certainly talked about what we saw as the ideal flow of the show,” Erickson continued. “But, from the beginning, we also wanted to be flexible enough that if something happened that surprised us, [narratively]and we fell in love with a certain narrative element or character, we would like to spend more time with those things or people. So we wanted to create a flexible plan that we could turn to if we had ideas. [of where we could take these things].
“I won’t say how many seasons we think we’ll last,” he added. “But we have this idea in mind, and we are also ready to roll with the punches a little.”
We don’t have much longer to wait for the long-awaited second season of one of the best Apple TV Plus shows. Indeed, Breakup‘s second release will make its global debut on one of the world’s best streaming services on Friday, January 17.
