Shehbaz Sharif meets the Iranian president on the sidelines of Eco Summit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met the Iranian president on Friday, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the 17th Summit of the Economic Organization (ECO) held in Khankendi, in Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, the two leaders examined the ongoing bilateral cooperation in all sectors and expressed their satisfaction with the progress made on the decisions taken during their previous meeting aimed to further strengthen Pakistani-Iranian relations.

The two leaders also discussed the evolution of the regional situation in the light of Israel’s unjustified aggression against Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz appreciated the management of President Pezeshkian and congratulated Iran’s decision to exercise restraint and pursue a cease-fire during the recent crisis.

Reiterating the unshakable solidarity of Pakistan with the people and the government of Iran, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the firm commitment of Pakistan to work with Iran through dialogue and diplomacy for peace in the region.

President Pezeshkian appreciated the strong diplomatic support of Pakistan at Iran during the international forums during the recent crisis and thanked Pakistan for his key role in de -escalation efforts.

Prime Minister Shehbaz has also sent a message of congratulations and better wishes for the supreme Iranian chief of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

17th Eco Summit

Prime Minister Shehbaz reached Azerbaijan on Thursday for an official two -day visit to participate in the 17th ECO summit.

The summit took place in Khankendi from July 3 to 4, under the theme “new eco vision of a sustainable future and climate resilient”, bringing together the heads of state and the government of the member countries to discuss urgent regional issues, including connectivity, trade and climate change.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ishaq Dar, the Federal Minister of Information Attaullah Tarar and the special assistant of Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.

When he arrived at Fuzuli International Airport, the Prime Minister was received by the Minister of Culture in Azerbaijan, Adil Karimli, Azerbaijan ambassador to Pakistan Khazar Farhadov, Pakistan ambassador to Azerbaijan Qasim Moinuddin and other senior diplomatic and government officials.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Prime Minor would address the summit describing Pakistan’s perspective on the main regional and global problems. It was expected to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to ECO Vision 2025 and pleads for deeper intra-regional trade, improved transport connectivity, greater energy cooperation and sustainable development.
