- Some users are still experiencing issues with Gemini for Home
- Other users report no issues with their devices
- The upgrade continues to roll out in some countries
The big Gemini for Home rollout continues – where Google’s new and improved Gemini AI replaces Google Assistant on its smart home devices – but users who have made the switch are reporting several issues and bugs.
Access to Gemini for Home is currently limited to a number of countries and a number of devices, and you must specifically sign up if you want Gemini to be on your Nest gadgets. This enables many additional features: you get AI-based descriptions of what your smart cameras see, for example.
However, you don’t have to look far on Reddit to find numerous reports of the bases being broken along the way. One user says their Home Hub can no longer set alarms or control smart lights, something Google Assistant could do easily – although there are responses in the thread from people who have worked with Gemini.
Another Reddit thread describes how the arrival of Gemini has ruined smart home automation – lots of actions triggered by a single voice command. The affected user responds “when asked to do a very specific thing [Gemini] seems to do what he wants instead” – although, again, this doesn’t seem to affect everyone.
Garage door problems
Gemini can’t be that stupid! from r/googlehome
One Reddit user claims that Gemini is having trouble reporting whether their garage door is closed or not, something Google Assistant could previously do without any problems. Apparently, Gemini responds by saying that there is no camera available to check the status of the garage door – even though there is.
For the sake of balance, it seems to work well for some users. If you decide to upgrade to Gemini for Home now, you may find that it’s a smooth, hassle-free operation, or you may find that some of the controls and automations you’ve come to rely on suddenly stop working. So it’s worth researching your particular use cases before making the change.
With an upgrade of this scale and importance, it’s fair to say that a few hurdles are to be expected: Google is attempting to update millions of smart home devices with Gemini, each with their own specific setups and configurations. It’s also understandable that users get annoyed and frustrated when basic functionality is broken.
At the very least, we hope these issues can be ironed out and resolved as quickly as possible – there’s no doubt that Gemini is the future of all Google smart devices. If you encounter any problems, you can report them to Google online.
