KARACHI: The Department of School Education and Literacy on Sunday extended reduced school hours – after which educational institutions were ordered to start classes at 9 am – across Sindh till February 4 as the cold wave continues to grip the province.

On January 10, the Sindh Education Department announced a review of school timings, ordering all public and private schools to open at 9 a.m. while keeping closing times unchanged.

“In continuation of the even notification of this department dated January 10, 2026, the schedule of all public and private educational institutions under the administrative control of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Sindh, shall continue up to 4/2/2026,” the notification read.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education said the decision was made due to intensifying cold weather in the province.

Acting on the directives of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, the revised timings have been extended till February 4, the spokesperson added.

The Ministry of Education had initially extended the revised school hours until January 26, amid a severe cold wave hitting the entire province.

Separately, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday that temperatures in Karachi may drop to single digits over the weekend.

The Met Office said the weather in the port city was likely to remain cold and dry with occasional winds.

Meanwhile, the PMD predicted more rain and snowfall in various parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.
