At least six people were killed when a shooter opened fire on a market in the Thailand Bangkok capital on Monday, Thai police said in a statement.

Deaths include the shooter who committed suicide, the Metropolitan Bureau Police Police.

“Police investigate the identity of the person and the reason for the incident,” Thai police said in a statement. The five people killed by the shooter were market security guards, he said.

No tourist was killed or injured during the shooting incident, said Sanong Saengmani, a police officer of the Bangkok district in Bang Sue, where the market which sells agricultural products is mainly located.

Tourism is a key economic engine in Thailand, the second economy of Southeast Asia, where growth has been slow and such incidents can potentially alleviate feeling.

In video sequences shared by the police, a suspect in a white hat and a suspended backpack above his chest walks in a parking lot in the market.

Armed violence and possession of firearms are not uncommon in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14 -year -old suspect used a modified handgun to kill two people and hurt five others in a luxury shopping center in the Bangkok center.

A year earlier, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a firearm attack in a nursery in eastern Thailand.
