- SK Telecom now offers replacement SIM cards
- Earlier in April, he suffered a malicious infection in which the crooks stole Usim data
- 25 million customers are eligible, but only 6 million will be served in May
The number one telecommunications supplier in South Korea, SK Telecom, gives free SIM cards to 25 million of its customers, after the recent USIM cyber attack. However, due to logistical challenges, he will not be able to serve everyone so quickly.
Earlier in April, the news announced that SK Telecom has undergone a malicious software infection through which threat actors tried to recover USIM information from customers. The attack would have taken place in mid-April 2025, at night between Saturday and Sunday, when most of the employees were absent for the weekend.
An USIM (Identity Module of Universal Subscriber) is the successor of the old SIM card. It is used in 3G, 4G and 5G mobile networks and is in most devices with cellular connectivity.

Basically, an USIM authenticates the identity of the device on a network, stores subscriber data (international identity of mobile subscribers, authentication keys, contacts and sometimes SMS), encrypts information passing and allows secure access to mobile services such as calls, data or texts.
A cybercriminal could use the data to clone SIM, follow the location of people, go around applications or listen to communications.
Although the survey is still underway and the number of people affected is not yet determined, SK Telecom has announced the offer of SIM replacement cards to 25 million mobile subscribers, including two million people spilled by budgetary operators. However, it will have no more than six million units throughout May 2025, which is why the company urged users to book an online slot machine:
“SK Telecom has blocked the excessive use of SIM information with its FDS and SIM protection services, but it still offers a free service for customers who wish to replace their SIM card”, reads the translated announcement by the machine. “Currently, we have 1 million USIMS, and we plan to secure an additional 5 million Sims at the end of May. However, it is expected that there will be a large number of customers at a time, so please check in advance via the online booking request system. ”
