Sohail Afridi given key task of restoring peace to KP

KARACHI:

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership has entrusted the new Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi with the crucial responsibility of restoring peace in the province, party sources told this correspondent.

According to PTI insiders, the leadership decided to change the provincial top spot mainly due to the deteriorating law and order situation in KP. They said Afridi would outline his priorities after he was formally sworn in.

He is expected to unveil his policy framework in line with the party founder’s vision, the sources said, adding that the new chief minister will take a multi-pronged approach to bring peace to the province, including consultations with the federal government and other stakeholders.

“A detailed review of the security situation in KP will be conducted and a long-term integrated strategy for peace will be formulated,” a senior PTI leader revealed. “The party believes that only a unified and inclusive approach involving all stakeholders can lead to lasting peace in the province.”

PTI sources maintained that the leadership is not entirely satisfied with the current federal policy towards KP and is advocating for a unified national approach to security issues in the province.

It was also learned that the new chief minister would address political leaders at all levels to take them into confidence. “Efforts will be made to ensure a broad consultation process for a lasting peace policy,” added another source.

On the other hand, key figures of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) assured that the federal government would extend full support to the new provincial government in its efforts to restore peace in the province.
