- Bloomberg says a new Sonos app refresh is in the works
- A key feature is additional iOS compatibility
- Anyone else having deja vu?
The Sonos calendar may have skipped 2025 in terms of its “two new products per year” promise, although the company launched a new amplifier earlier this year – and apparently 2026 will be a much busier year for the brand. So, shall we see what shiny new goodies Sonos Clause (sorry) has packed up its bag for us? It’s… a redesign of the application. Another.
According to Bloomberg, the company plans to rework and update its app offering in the coming months, with a first version apparently already working internally. It’s unclear if this means the Sonos app just works or if it’s actually usable for the many customers still unhappy with the latest update. Apparently, the changes will be optional and slowly rolled into the app rather than presented as a big step forward. (Lesson learned there, it seems.)
So what could really change? Apparently, you will now be able to control your Sonos device from the iPhone lock screen, thanks to Apple’s recent developments in this area. This all ties into Apple’s Live Activities (the real-time, interactive notifications that appear on the iPhone’s lock screen and in Dynamic Island), which would certainly be a welcome upgrade for iPhone owners.
This probably won’t be the only change, as it’s something the Android app already offers, but it’s the only one we’ve heard about so far. However, a company can’t release drip features if there’s only one, so we’ll probably hear more about them soon.
Keeping fans happy
The combination of words “Sonos” and “app” may give users ideas given that a botched app change from May 2024 that wasn’t really fixed until 2025 is now what fans think of when they hear those words used together.
The new app at the time had slow volume controls, features missing from the old app, and a more confusing design that took users too long to understand. Although the problem is largely fixed now, a quick browse of the Sonos subreddit still yields complaints about the app and its bugs.
For reference, Sonos new The new app really needs to not have these issues, otherwise it could signal the end of trust in the brand: fool me once, and all that. The affections of many Sonos fans are at stake, and if the company plans to release a series of blockbuster products this year, it will need some fervent cheerleaders to help it, especially with the growing list of WiiM products hitting the market…
