Sony Bank May Issue USD Stablecoin in US Next Year: Nikkei

Sony Bank plans to issue a stablecoin in the United States as early as fiscal 2026, the Nikkei reported Monday.

The online banking arm of Sony Financial Group, spun off from the electronics giant this year, envisions the USD-pegged stablecoin being used to pay for games and anime, according to the report.

Currently, customers widely use credit cards to carry out such transactions. Sony could therefore seek to promote stablecoin payments thanks to the lower fees they allow.

Sony Bank applied for a banking license in the United States in October and plans to create a subsidiary to manage the issuance of a stablecoin, seeking to seize the opportunity presented by the expansion of this sector over the last year.

The United States passed the GENIUS Act in July, establishing a regulatory framework for the issuance and use of dollar-backed stablecoins.

Sony Bank did not respond to CoinDesk’s request for additional comment.
