- Battery fire destroys storage equipment in South Korea
- This problem has put the South Korean government in a bind
- More than 850 TB of information has been lost forever
A fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) data center in Daejeon, South Korea, perfectly illustrates why we place such importance on backup services. Reports suggest that the incident was the result of a battery fire and it destroyed over 858TB of data, which is now permanently lost.
In the fire, 384 battery packs were burned, which destroyed 96 government systems. While this was obviously a huge loss, 95 of them had backups – but not the G-drive (government drive) system, used primarily by the Department of Personnel Management.
This is exactly why we talk (probably too much) about the importance of having the best cloud backup to take care of your data. The best advice we can give you is to use the 3-2-1 rule, meaning three copies, on two types of media (e.g. cloud and hardware), with one kept off-site.
Total loss
Although data recovery software is available, recovering from a loss of this magnitude is unlikely to be easy. Each worker was allocated 30 GB of disk space – which, incredibly, was not backed up due to its large capacity.
The most recent data suggests that only 115 of the 647 networks have been restored, bringing the recovery rate to date to just 18%. Recovery is expected to take up to a month.
Emails, government websites and national 119 were taken down due to the fire, and reports estimate that 8 years of data have been lost and around 17% of central government civil servants are affected.
Departments that depend on G-drive have been significantly affected following the incident. A source from the Ministry of Personnel Management confirmed this:
“Employees have stored all work materials on the G-Drive and used them as needed, but operations are now virtually at a standstill. »
