The defender of Los Angeles Galaxy Maya Yoshida had the only score on Sunday evening, but it was a clean goal that led to a 1-0 victory for Sporting Kansas City. With the victory, they have marked the story, becoming the first MLS team to win a match without registering a shot.
It was only the third victory in 11 tries for Sporting Kansas City this season, but their second in the last three games.
As for the galaxy, they continued the worst start by a title champion in the history of the league. The Galaxy (0-8-3) is still looking for its first victory 11 games in the season and even a 3-0-2 file in five previous clashes with Sporting KC (3-7-1) did not help.
In the 13th minute, Daniel Salloi de KC sent a cross on the ground, and he diverted Maya Yoshida and in the net. There was no attacker close enough to the cross to threaten to hit him, but Yoshida tried to make a defensive game and he went wrong.
John Pulskamp had to stop, and he came first half on the way to his second white sheet at his 11th start of the season for Sporting KC. His stop came just before half-time on a right shot from the center of the box by John Nelson.
John McCarthy did not have a backup for the galaxy.
It was a sweet revenge for Dejan Jveljic, who came to Sporting KC in the first cash trade in the history of the League after helping the Galaxy to win her sixth MLS Cup last season. He heads the team with five goals – all at home.
The galaxy missed Riqui Puig, who has not played since his knee injury in the playoffs. And Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec, who have combined for 50 contribution goals in the championship race, have only four so far this season.
The acting coach of KC Sporting Kerry Zavagnin and Greg Vanney of the Galaxy were teammates of the American national male team. The two coaches represented their current teams when the two clubs clashed in the final of the 2000 mL Cup conference – won by the Wizards of the then City of the City, who beat the Chicago Fire 1-0 in the championship match.
The Galaxy goes to play New York Red Bulls on Saturday. Sporting KC Voyage to play Portland Timbers on Saturday.
