- Spotify now asks British users to prove that their age access mature content
- Age verification checks were introduced as part of the UK online security law
- Spotify says he will present age checks if she suspects that you are under 13 years old, but many users have met checks despite the fact that more than 18
Spotify has become the last application to introduce measures designed to comply with the UK online security law, asking users to undergo age verification checks if they want to see or listen to the restricted age – and many users are not satisfied.
The age -age verification requirements of the online security law have come into force from July 25 and require all platforms that display adult content to verify that users are over 18 using age verification checks.
So far, we have seen tastes of Xbox, Discord and Reddit introduce age verification, and now Spotify has done the same.
Like Reddit and X, Spotify has teamed up with the Digital Identification Company Yoti, a service that performs age controls via facial scanning. For Spotify users, Yoti will use various means of age verification, from facial scanning at the request of an analysis of your identifier if you suspect that you are under 13 years (minimum spotify age requirement).
He will also use algorithmic methods to estimate the age of a user. But Spotify goes further, indicating in its official plan that “your account will be deactivated and ultimately deleted” if you do not finish the age verification process.
While Yoti says that your data will be kept safe and ultimately deleted, the new requirement has caused an uproar among some Spotify users.
Some have brought forums such as Reddit to emphasize that young people are intelligent enough to find ways to get around the checks, for example using a VPN to change their location in another than the United Kingdom-and a minority even threatened to return to hacking (see below).

What is “mature content” in Spotify?
This is the burning question among Spotify fans, since the musical streaming application does not host X-evaluated content on the same scale as Reddit or X. However, the platform has certain features which are intended for mature users.
In the case of Spotify, it can be asked to check your age if you try to “access certain contents and features Spotify, such as musical clips labeled like 18+ by right -handers”. This could also apply to podcasts that discuss mature content and songs with explicit words.
Fortunately, there is a way to come back if your account becomes deactivated due to an inaccurate age estimate. According to Spotify, you will get an email that “allows you to reactivate your account within 90 days of deactivation”, after which you will have to go through age check checks.
Until now, I have not been invited to check my age in the Spotify application when I try to access mature podcasts and music clips, but a handful of users on forums like Reddit who are much over 18 have already met the checks.
Why have VPNs become so popular?
Spotify explained in various community articles that it is not designed to operate with VPNs, and you should naturally not use one to bypass age verification checks.
However, this did not prevent free VPNs from dominating Apple’s British App Store, because Internet users seek to find ways to protect their data from future violations, or perhaps even by completely bypassing these checks.
VPNs work by encrypting your internet traffic, but they are not all equal – so it is important to choose the right one for your needs. Free VPNs can record an excessive amount of data, which could ultimately endanger your confidentiality, and sometimes lack important security features.
