Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver DK Metcalf spoke to a fan in the stands at Ford Field during the team’s game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

During the interaction, the two men spoke before Metcalf appeared to try to grab the fan’s blue wig. Then he threw a closed fist at the fan towards her face, although it seemed to have missed.

Metcalf was not ejected because officials did not see the altercation, but ESPN reported that the NFL would review the incident.

While it is almost certain that Metcalf will face league discipline, whether or not he will be suspended will be the big question for a Steelers team that is in the midst of a playoff race.

Metcalf is quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ favorite player in the wide receiver room. Coming into the game, Metcalf had 808 yards on 55 catches this season with six touchdowns.

Before the game, the Steelers held a one-game lead in the AFC North division at 8-6, with the Baltimore Ravens right behind them at 7-7. The Ravens face the New England Patriots later Sunday night, but they’ll likely be tuning in to see what happens in Pittsburgh in Detroit.

Given the current AFC playoff situation, the Steelers’ best chance to make the playoffs is to win the division, and having every impact player on the field for the remaining games is crucial to achieving that goal.

Metcalf knows better than to interact with fans like this, but his actions could have serious consequences depending on how the league views them.
