Stephen A. Smith responded to a recent opinion article by Wall Street Journal which called for a government survey on WNBA for the controversial treatment of physical parts against the superstar Caitlin Clark.
The play of the Wall Street Journal entitled “The WNBA and Caitlin Clark’s Civils” attracted mixed reactions this week after arguing that Clark was subjected to a hostile workplace because of the way the referees called the physical parts against it dating from its recruit season in 2024. Smith suggested support for a potential investigation.
“I am not saying here that the case will be won by the government if I arrive at the points. I say they have one case, they have an argument,” said Smith about the idea during an episode of his show on Tuesday.
Smith also suggested that President Donald Trump could use such an investigation to consolidate the support of his supporters.
“Let us come to see that at his discretion, at his disposal, if he finds that it is a problem that is politically appropriate for him, that Trump will not use this to feed his base?” Smith said. “If [Clark] is considered to be physically abused on the basketball court in a way which is such a clear and blatant gap in relation to what happens to others, that that Man will not say something?
“Do you not think that Catin Clark could become a problem of national proportions, potentially international and certainly federal?”
Smith quoted recent agreements from Columbia University and Harvard University with Trump administration to settle alleged civilian violations of civil rights against students and Jewish employees compared to a potential investigation into Clark’s WNBA.
“If the Trump administration can settle with Columbia for a payment of $ 221 million on what happened on a campus, you think you can definitively exclude what type of noise could be done if the WNBA continues to allow this Caitlin Clark treatment?” Smith said.
Clarkâs teammate, Fever Star Sophie Cunningham, was one of the most vocal criticisms of WNBA players and referees in Clark’s physical treatment and how it is managed.

“And now being in your team and seeing it, I say to myself:” What do people do? “In fact, it’s just too much.

“In the locker room, she leaves, I think she is like” finally! “” Said Cunningham. “But I think it had somewhat our team together as a whole. Everyone was like” we have to protect ourselves. “”

Cunningham previously called the referees only a few days after the fight of June 17 while addressing journalists, so as not to protect Clark, when she had to tackle the fight publicly.
“During that, it was just part of the game. I think the referees had a lot to do with it. It was an accumulation for a few years now, not protecting the star player of the WNBA,” said Cunningham. “In the end, I will protect my teammates. That’s what I do.”
