- Strava rolled out new workout profiles in its latest mobile update
- New activities include padel, basketball, volleyball, cricket and dance.
- They are being rolled out to users around the world, and Strava has announced that there will be more on the way.
When it comes to the best fitness apps, Strava remains one of the most popular fitness subscription services, having the edge over Fitbit Premium and Garmin Connect because it’s tracker agnostic. Now he’s adding even more workouts to his list of activities.
If you’ve updated your Strava app, you’ll now find that the five new workouts are dance, basketball, volleyball, cricket, and padel (aka the fastest growing sport in the world). This brings Strava’s plethora of workout options to over 50, and according to the platform, its new additions were among the most requested activities by users, and now they’re finally rolling out to its more than 180 million users.
While a relatively minor upgrade, the addition of these new workouts lifts a huge restriction that prevented users from accurately recording these types of activities before. Despite Strava’s diversity of activities, users who frequently participate in the activities listed above would have to use the generic “Workout” option to record their activity sessions (provided they log in natively in Strava), which would result in inaccurate tracking metrics.
With designated tracking options for padel, basketball, volleyball, cricket and dance, it allows more sports fans to enjoy less common activities than running or cycling, which Strava initially built its brand on. But the biggest benefit is that users can now track these specific activities without questioning the accuracy of the results, which Strava highlighted in its announcement:
“Rather than having to save these sports as a “workout,” fans of these five newly added activities can now specifically select their favorite from the sport selection menu before saving them to Strava.”
While its five new workout profiles are new to the Strava experience, other fitness tracking apps jumped on the bandwagon a while ago. The standard Apple Watch workout app has supported tracking profiles for dance, volleyball, cricket, and basketball for some time, although it has yet to roll out a padel option.
In addition to its new exercise options, Strava recently gave its mobile app experience a boost. Its new Premium level feature, Instant Workouts, takes into account your recent activity logs to generate personalized recommendations on more than 40 different sports activities. Strava has also rolled out a WorkOutdoors-style feature for Apple Watch users, letting you view and follow a pre-generated route map.
However, Strava has a lot more going on behind the scenes, and in addition to its slew of new workouts, the company announced that more activity types are on the way to users this year, likely part of the improvements ahead of its long-rumored IPO. We have contacted Strava for comment and will update this story when we know more.
