- Soldiers leak data on Strava
- Public activities found around British bases
- Keeping Strava private is a simple solution
If you need another reminder, make sure you’re careful about what Strava data you post publicly and share with the world: Days after a French naval officer revealed the location of his warship through a Strava trial, sensitive data of more than 500 soldiers in the UK was also exposed.
An investigation by The i Paper revealed Strava routes and profile information posted by British military personnel at several locations across the UK, including at bases in Northwood, Faslane and North Yorkshire.
One of the publicly released images is titled “Security Breach,” suggesting that the soldiers involved are aware that their activities can be seen – and are not too concerned about who might be watching where they are practicing.

As the report points out, the locations of these bases are not secret. However, Strava races can provide details on which personnel are assigned, where and how military personnel are moved.
“Frankly ridiculous”
The i Paper was able to identify the submariners and their families using Strava activity logs published around HMNN Clyde in Faslane, home of Britain’s Trident nuclear submarines. Photos of warships entering port were also posted via the app.
“Having individuals use personal accounts in a restricted area allows foreign states to gather small pieces of information that you could potentially piece together about an individual’s life,” security expert Dan Lomas told The i Paper.
A British military intelligence official reached for comment said it was “frankly ridiculous” that such a large amount of information was being released publicly – and by military personnel at all levels, it appears.
Whether your work is related to national security or not, you should be careful about what data you post on Strava. You can manage this via the Privacy controls section of Settings – to find it, tap the cog icon in the upper right corner of the screen. You in the Strava app on your phone.
