Strong rain disrupts food

The sixth fate of the current monsoon season brought an hour of torrential rain to Lahore on Saturday, flooding the streets and disturbing the city’s power supply.

The showers affected more than 120 feeders from Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), leaving several electricity districts for hours. According to Lesco, the breakdowns were caused by the triggering of feeders and other technical defects.

The affected areas included the canton, Green Town, Samanabad, Gulshan Ravi, Qila Gujjar Singh, Shahdara, Imamia Colony, Shalimar, Baghbanpura, Harbanspura, Garhi Shahu, Mughalpura and Bhati Gate, as well as several parts of the classified city.

Damage complaints to transformers have also increased, leading to prolonged breakdowns in certain districts.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) reported that 65 millimeters of rain had been recorded in Pani Wala Talab between 1:35 p.m. and 2:35 p.m., flooding the low zones. Gulberg and Lakshmi Chowk received 58 mm, Nishtar Town and Chowk Nakhuda 57 mm, Farrukhabad 70 mm, Gulshan Ravi 19 mm, Iqbal Town 39mm, Samanabad 37 mm, Jhahar Town 34 mm and Quirtaba Chowk 23mm.

The strongest precipitation of the day was recorded in Pani Wala Talab at 77 mm, followed by Lakshmi Chowk at 74 mm. The upper shopping center has received 7 mm of precipitation.

Rainwater has accumulated on major arteries, notably Mall Road, Jail Road, Canal Road and at intersections such as Lakshmi Chowk, Davis Road, Empress Road and Haji Camp.

Model Town, Kot Lakhpat, Peco Road, Canton, Green City, Factory area, Muslim city and garden city have also experienced an aquatic labyrinth.

The showers forced the postponement of the fun race of the independence day family scheduled for the evening at the Nishtar Park Sports Complex. The organizers cited water accumulation on the site as a reason.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has announced that a seasonal level persists in northern Balutchistan, with wet currents from the Oman Sea reaching the upper parts of the country. A western fresh hollow also affects northern areas.

Hot and humid conditions should continue in most of the country on Sunday, with rain, wind and thunderstorms probably in northeast Punjab, the Potohar region, Islamabad, Upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, cashmere and the hilly regions nearby.

In the past 24 hours, hot and humid weather has prevailed in most regions, with isolated precipitation reported in certain parts of Punjab.

Lahore’s assistant commissioner Syed Musa Raza inspected the drainage operations in Chowburji and examined Wasa’s response to the Mousson rains.

He ordered the Wasa teams to eliminate water elimination from low zones while ensuring minimum disturbances for residents.

He asked all the departments to stay on high alert and maintain close coordination to prevent water accumulation, especially in vulnerable places.
