Sugar prices drop from RS10 to Karachi

The prices of sugar in Karachi fell considerably last week, large rates down from Rs 10 to Rs 174 per kilogram.

The retail prices vary between Rs 180 and Rs 185 per kilogram in the city.

However, the sugar situation in Punjab is more complicated. The province faces an ongoing sugar crisis, triggered by disputes between sweets, wholesalers and brokers on newly fixed official prices.

The federal government has set the price of sugar at Rs 165 per kilogram for Mills and Rs 173 for retail sales, but these prices were not accepted by sugar dealers, who claim that Mills sell sugar at Rs 176 per kilogram.

Consequently, sugar suppliers at Punjab suspended deliveries, which puts the price to Rs 200 per kilogram in certain regions.

The concessionaires have warned that the sugar supply will remain interrupted unless Mulls complies with the official prices set by the government.
