Sydney Sweeney has just admitted she finds it “difficult” to ask for help.
Talk to News from the sky about his new film Christine, which is based on the life of boxer Christy Martin, the American actress says it was a common feeling between her and the character she plays.
“I have a really hard time asking for help and my friends have recently pointed this out to me, and they’re like, ‘Sydney, it’s okay to ask. You can.’ There’s nothing wrong with that, but I really struggle with it,” she admitted.
She added: “I think it’s hard, especially as a woman, there are so many expectations on us to experience everything together.”
“And if we ask for help, it’s a sign of weakness. And we don’t want to be seen that way, even though, [a man] can ask for it, and no one says “ah, he’s weak”. But if a director asks for help, it would be like, ‘oh, she’s not prepared for this role,'” she said. Euphoria the actress explained.
The film’s director, David Michod, who also co-wrote the biopic with his wife Mirrah Foulkes, agreed and said it was a feeling his wife had also experienced in the industry.
“Mirrah has had that experience a lot. It’s like women have to do it, as soon as they reveal that they don’t know something, it becomes, ‘oh, she’s not prepared, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she’s overwhelmed’. And I feel like I’m telling people I don’t know what I’m doing 20 times a day,” he admitted.
The movie Christie is based on Christy’s boxing career, depicting her struggles as a closeted gay woman and domestic violence as well as the coercive control she faced in her personal life by her husband and head trainer James ‘Jim’ Martin.
