- The 2025 more Synology range only works with certain hard drives
- He says it is for lower failure rates and compatibility problems
- Older models will not be affected by this new policy
Nas-Maker Taiwanese synology has confirmed a new policy that requires Synology brand hard drives to be used for full compatibility in its 2025 Plus Network (NAS) storage devices.
From the launch, the policy indicates that the brand of brand of synology must be used, but the company promises to “update the product compatibility list because the additional discs can be carefully verified in synology systems”, declared a company spokesperson (via via Ars Technica).
In the meantime, this could explain the reduced choice and the increase in costs for customers, with potential sustainability problems from the incapacity of users to use hard drives they may already have, which makes them unusable.
Synology nas devices hard drives
Synology has nine products in its Plus range, supporting up to 24 hard drives, but users will have to use only approved storage players.
The company said that “synology systems are less at risk of failure of variation and continuous compatibility problems”.
Chad Chiang, director general of German and British companies in Synology, noted: “With our owner hard drive solution, we have already seen important advantages for our customers in various deployment scenarios.”
Despite the change for the 2025-Nontward models, the company confirmed that the older models sold up to 2024 (excluding XS Plus models and rack models) remain unchanged.
Interestingly, Synology does not make its own hard drives, by choosing rather to rename the models of popular brands like Toshiba and Seagate.
This could be good news, indicating the possibility that other Toshiba and Seagate models can appear on the approved list of third -party discs on a later date, but this could also mean that readers of other brands could be less likely to appear on the list.
Of course, it is only speculation, but we contacted Synology for more details in the hope that we can access a list of pre-approved third party readers.
