Peshawar:
The Tarbela dam spits were opened on Saturday after an increase in the reservoir water level, according to managers, while the province of disaster management (PDMA) issued an alert to warn potential floods along the banks of the Industry river.
In a press release, the PDMA warned that the release of water through the spills would increase the flow of the Industry river, the discharge levels which should increase between 260,000 and 270,000 brackets.
The Disaster Management Authority ordered the district administrations to remain on alert and closely monitor the local populations living along the banks.
Officials have warned that the increase in water flow could lead to flood type conditions in low zones adjacent to the river.
Residents living near the Industry river, in particular fishermen and livestock shepherds, were invited to move on a safer land to avoid any risk placed by rising waters.
The PDMA also urged the public to remain vigilant and to contact the 1700 telephone assistance line in the event of an emergency or unfortunate situation.
In order to prevent any unhappy incident, the deputy commissioner Muhammad Irfanullah Mehsud issued a warning, urging people to stay far from the banks of the Industry river. The district administration confirmed the spills open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
A special call was made to residents of Kund, Khairabad, Jabi Mandori, Shuangi, Mamakhel, Kahi and other surrounding regions: avoiding the river is crucial to save lives.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) predicted possible floods and an increase in water flow in the Kabul river and the Indus due to rain from July 13 to 14.
According to NDMA, a low level flow is expected in the Kabul river in Nowshera. An increase in water level is also expected in the Swat, Panjkoora and Nulla river due to rains.
People living in these areas are requested to adopt precautionary measures and avoid crossing streams and nulls during the rains.
