A quarrel against a transgender competitor who led to packages and sanctions did not prevent the Columbia Bible College (CBC) from going to the end this year.
CBC won the National Women’s Women’s Basketball Championship of the Canadian College Sports Association on Saturday evening, beating St. Mary’s University 77-70 to win the title for the first time in the history of the program.
For CBC, Elissa Vreugdenhil won the MVP of the CCAA championship tournament, up 19 points with 12 rebounds in victory. Grace Park scored 20 points with six rebounds and four assists to claim the honors of the match player, while Madeline Beerwald scored 20 points with eight rebounds.

The victory is not only the first national championship in the History of the CBC, but also marked a spectacular reversal of only two years ago, because the program underwent a sequence of 54 consecutive defeats from 2018 to 2023. The program had not even won a conference eliminatory match before this season.
But the team also completed all of this in the shadow of accusations related to the treatment of a trans athlete. Head coach Taylor Claggett was suspended and the team lost his right to welcome the conference tournament after allegations of abuse against a trans athlete at the University of the island of Vancouver (VIU) in October.
The quarrel began in a match of October 25 between the two teams, which Viu won 69-56 after player Trans Harriette Mackenzie scored a summit of 19 points. Five days after this match, the Trans athlete published an Instagram video alleging that Claggett “has stuck one of our sports employees and made a tirade on the way I should not be allowed to play”.
It was also alleged that Mackenzie was deliberately the victim of a fault on the ground by a CBC player. In response, Claggett published his own declaration on Instagram, saying that Mackenzie’s statements were inaccurate.

“My intention has nothing to do with a specific athlete, but instead, the safety of female athletes in his sport,” wrote Clargett.
VIU then submitted an official complaint to the PACWEST, which prompted an investigation. When the two teams were to play again on January 10 and 11, VIU refused.
“Intimidation, harassment and discrimination do not have their place in athletics,” said VIU in a statement at PK Press Club Digital in January concerning the decision not to play. “VIU fully supports our students athletes and affirms the right of all athletes to participate in an environment that prioritizes their safety and well-being.”
VIU asked that the two plans do not count as losses in the team’s file, which was granted by the PACWEST.
CBC provided a statement to PK Press Club Digital this weekend declaring “the accusations that CBC, his coaches, his players and his fans are a threat of security are simply false and badly informed”.

A few days later, CBC players condemned Mackenzie, in a letter obtained by PK Press Club Digital.
CBC players blamed Mackenzie for “personal attacks”, “defamatory comments” and even “comments that encourage violence” against their coach.
“The videos and letters published by members of the Women’s basketball team VIU in the last three months have directly violated several rules set out in article 17.2 of the manual. Various articles have included personal attacks ”, defamatory comments,` `lack of respect for the pacwest ‘and led to comments that encourage violence and / or hate’ ‘led by our’ Coach, “the letter indicated.
“All the allegations made by the VIU players concerning our team and our coach should have been directly communicated to Pacwest managers alone, they should not have been downloaded publicly on social networks.”
The Pacwest finally caught up on the side of Viu and Mackenzie. He suspended CLAGGETT in early February and CBC lost his right to welcome the PACWEST championships.
CBC managed to fight to the end of the match for the Pacwest title, which was against Viu and Mackenzie, on March 1. Mackenzie scored 21 points in this match to lead Viu to a 69-59 victory, and then received the MVP conference tournament during a ceremony after the match.
But the hopes of the national VIU championship were wiped out quickly, after a defeat against the Mohawk College on the first round on Wednesday. Mackenzie’s Instagram account, the platform that initially shared the allegations against Claggett and CBC, was deleted the same day.
Meanwhile, CBC has now flowed to a historic championship, despite the frequent distractions of this season.
