Rawalpindi: Torrential showers have continued to beat Islamabad and Rawalpindi waiting for the night, with 129 millimeters of rain raising fear of urban floods, which prompted the administration to request the help of the army in twin cities.

According to a spokesperson for the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the director general of the authority contacted the Pakistani army 111 brigade because it was decided to call the army in an emergency.

With the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) providing for more fire, the sirens were resounded in the zones surrounding Nullah Leh because the water level increased by 16 feet.

Wasa said that a rain emergency had been imposed and that his teams and heavy machines were deployed in low areas of Rawalpindi with busy staff to treat accumulated water.

“Nullah Leh and the drains through the city are monitored continuously,” said Wasa MD, adding that the water level in Katarian was 16 feet and 14 feet on the Gowalmandi bridge.

Meanwhile, rescue 1122 was also put on alert, its district administrative agent advising people to attack places before urban floods and evacuating dilapidated buildings.

Until now, Saidpur has received 53 mm of rain, 77 mm in Golra, 95 mm in Bokra, 67 mm in Shamsabad, 105 mm in Kachehri, 90 mm in Pirwadhai and Gowalmandi and 80 mm in Katarian.

Cloudburst in Chakwal

In addition to twin cities, various areas of Punjab continue to be beaten by heavy rain. A burst of clouds was observed in Chakwal, causing up to 423 mm of rain.

Several low zones have been flooded with water, entering the houses. The district administration said that a rescue operation was underway to move citizens in safer places.

According to the additional deputy commissioner, the disastrous situation is the result of a Cloudburst.
