Chinese President Xi Jinping criticized on Monday “intimidation behavior” in the world order while he gathered regional leaders for a summit.

He called the leaders – including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Vladimir Putin of Russia and Naretra Modi of India – to “adhere to equity and justice … oppose the mentality of the Cold War, the confrontation of the camp and the intimidation behavior”, in a speech in the city of Tianjin.

Shanghai’s cooperation organization, which brings together for a two -day summit, includes China, Pakistan, India, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan and BĂ©larus – with 16 other affiliated countries as observers or “dialogue partners”.

China and Russia have sometimes presented SCO as an alternative to the NATO military alliance.

“The current international situation becomes chaotic and intertwined,” Xi told leaders.

“The security and development tasks faced by Member States have become even more difficult,” he added.

“Looking back, despite the tumultuous times, we succeeded by practicing the spirit of Shanghai,” he said, referring to the name of the group.

“Looking towards the future, with the world undergoing turbulence and a transformation, we must continue to follow the spirit of Shanghai, to keep our feet on the ground, to move forward and to better perform the functions of the organization.”

XI said China will work with all the OCS parts to bring the regional security forum to a new level, when it has unveiled its ambition for a new world security order which poses a challenge to the United States.

The SCO has established a model for a new type of international relations, Xi said in the opening remarks of the summit, adding that the forum has opposed external interference.

XI also spoke of constructive participation in international affairs, opposition to hegemonism and the policy of power, as well as the promotion of multilateralism in its remarks.

The security -oriented block, which began as a group of six Eurasian countries, extended to 10 permanent members and 16 countries of dialogue and observers in recent years.

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that China had played a “fundamental” role in maintaining global multilateralism on Sunday.

Analysts claim that China will use the largest summit of this year to demonstrate an alternative vision of global governance to the international order led by Americans at a time of the development of erratic policies, an American retirement from multilateral organizations and geopolitical flows.

Beijing also used the summit as an opportunity to repair links with New Delhi.

Modi, who is in China during his first visit to seven years, and Xi have both agreed on Sunday that their countries are development partners, not rivals, and have discussed means to improve trade ties in the midst of the uncertainty of the global price.
