The rumors of 43rumors suggest that the OM-5 II system could be revealed later this month, coinciding with the Bild Exo in New York, which takes place from June 17 to 18.
Such a model would succeed OM-5, which remains at the forefront of our best travel cameras guide, although it is almost three years old. It is thanks to its compact body, its retro style, its superb choice of objective and its competitive price.
The OM-5 II details are rare at this stage, which leaves me skeptical about such an imminent announcement. However, a potential tasty upgrade is presented for the second generation model – a stacked sensor.
Recent cameras of the OM system have tended to be minor upgrades, but a stacked sensor would represent a huge boost of the performance of the original model.
The disadvantage probably is a sharp increase in prices. Indeed, the stacked sensors are much more expensive than the ordinary type, as used in OM-5.
Currently, the OM OM-3 system is the cheapest mirror camera available with a stacked sensor, but it still costs much more than OM-5.
A potential OM-5 II needs a reasonable price difference in OM-3, and if it materializes with a sensor stacked for less, it could be a good deal, cement the position of the OM-5 series as a higher choice for travel.
That said, the competitive price of OM-5 is a key factor for its highest position in our best travel cameras guide, and the use of a stacked sensor will inevitably increase the price.
Beyond potentially inheriting an stacked sensor, we know few precious on the OM-5 II potentially to come.
An update from which I can be sure, if the OM-5 II land, is the USB-C load. After all, the new Common Charge of the EU obliges USB-C as a universal load port standard, and the current model was one of the latest cameras to launch with micro USB connectivity.
