“Everything I have experienced in recent years, being here, having a chance to win, is very emotional,” he said after the event.
Cabrera was sentenced to prison for threats and harassment against two of his ex-girlfriends. He was released in parole in August 2023 and managed to play the events of the PGA Tour champions later that year.
He told Golf Digest after his release from prison that he was embarrassed by his behavior and asked for his former girlfriends.

“I am repentant and embarrassed,” said Cabrera. “I made serious errors. I refused to listen to someone and I did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted. It was bad. I ask forgiveness from Micaela. I ask forgiveness from Celia. They had the unlucky to cross the paths with me when I was at worst. I was not the devil, but I did bad things.”
Cabrera should participate in masters later this week, because champions have exemptions for life.
“I can’t wait to see it,” said Adam Scott, winner of the 2013 masters on Sunday in Augusta National. “This is a happy thing for me. We have a fairly long story. I met him for the first time on the European tour before we are both on the PGA Tour. We played cups of the presidents, we were partners.”
