A call contesting the acquittal of the president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Iddat case, were sent back to the chief judge of the High Court of Islamabad for The training of a new bench.
The hearing, chaired by judge Azam Khan’s additional judge, presented arguments on both sides.
The petitioner, Khawar Maneka, was represented by the legal advisor Zahid Asif Chaudhry and Iqbal Kakur, among others.
Representing the respondents, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, were lawyers Ali Bukhari, Shoaib Shaheen and Niazullah Niazi.
During the procedure, Zahid Asif Chaudhry argued that the acquittal order made on July 13, 2024 by the additional sessions judge was disputed.
Responding to this, Shoaib Shaheen raised concerns about the impartiality of the bench, requesting that the case be transferred to another panel of judges.
“You have already disclosed your position; This case should be transferred to another bench, “said Shoaib Shaheen.
Judge Azam Khan responded to the concerns, declaring: “We previously heard a review for a review. In the light of your request, we will send the case to the chief judge for the formation of a new bench. »»
Following this, the court officially transferred the appeal file to the chief judge Aamer Farooq of the High Court of Islamabad.
The Iddat affair revolves around allegations according to which the marriage of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi took place during the Iddat period of Bushra, a duration prescribed by Islamic law after divorce.
Both were acquitted in July 2024, but due to legal objections, an appeal was filed in court.
Chief judge Aamer Farooq will now determine the composition of the new bench to hear the call.
Imran, Bushra sentenced in a case of 190 million pounds sterling
Earlier this month, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced in the 190 million pound sterling case. Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison, while Bushra Bibi received a sentence of seven years in prison.
The judge of the Nasir Javed Rana liability court announced the order in a courtroom inside the Adiala prison in Rawalpindi, where Imran had been detained for more than a year.
In addition to prison terms, the court has inflicted fines of 1 million rupees on Imran and 500,000 rupees on Bushra. If the fines are not paid, Imran Khan will serve an additional six months in prison and Bushra Bibi will risk three additional months.
The verdict also said that the property of the “Sham Trust”, Al-Qadir University Project Trust, should be confiscated from the federal government in accordance with article 10 (a) of the national responsibility ordinance, 1999.
The verdict was announced in the midst of close security outside the prison. After the verdict, Bushra Bibi was immediately arrested in the courtroom.
