Zhaoxin presented the Kaisheng KH-50000, its latest server processor which adopts a design based on chipsets very similar to the EPYC range of AMD.
This similarity raises the question of whether the architecture reflects an independent innovation or is strongly based on previous links between Chinese companies and AMD technology.
What makes this version more intriguing is that Zhaoxin has not yet disclosed the thermal power of design, an omission that lets industry observers wonder what will be the effectiveness of this 96 hearts.
Choice of architecture and design
The KH-50000 uses Zhaoxin’s “Century Avenue” architecture, which seems to descend from the previous conceptions of Centaur Technology.
The chip uses a chipset layout made up of twelve calculation chips grouped around a large E/S chip, creating a total of 96 cores and 384 MB of L3 cache.
A second model reduces the account to 72 cores but slightly increases the basic clock.
The two versions exclude simultaneous multithreading, which maintains the number of threads equal to the number of hearts.
Compared to its predecessor, the KH-40000, the KH-50000 offers extensive memory and connectivity management.
It now welcomes 12 DDR5-5200 channels, allowing up to 3 TB of memory, a figure that exceeds the maximum of 2 TB of the old DDR4 platform.
The chip also introduces 128 PCIe 5.0 and 16 PCIe 4.0 tracks, tripling bandwidth opportunities compared to the previous generation.
While the SATA and USB ports have been reduced, the transition to USB 3.2 Gen 2 modernizes the remaining connections.
The physical imprint measures 72 x 76 mm, which closely corresponds to the Genoa and Bergamo of AMD processors.
It adapts to a LGA socket and can evolve towards 2S and 4S systems, reaching up to 384 cores on a single motherboard.
Zhaoxin’s ZPI 5.0 interconnection ensures communication between chips, aimed at reflecting the scalability offered by AMD Epyc and Intel Xeon platforms.
The KH-50000 is not designed for game or office workloads because it is strictly positioned for the server segment.
Here, the performances are measured in terms of flow and scalability rather than consumption references.
However, comparison with the best AMD processor and the fastest processors is inevitable, even if China’s national priorities can be more important than competition with Western suppliers.
What remains uncertain is TDP, a critical factor that determines the degree of practicality of this processor for real deployments.
