New Delhi: At least four children were killed and 17 injured in the western state of Rajasthan in India after the roof of a school building collapsed on Friday, local media reported, with dozens still feared that the rubble.

Local media indicated that the students were taking courses in a public school in Jhalawar when the building collapsed.

The incident took place around 8:30 am, local time at the PippiDi Government School in Manohar Thana, Jhalawar district, according to NDTV. The officials said that around 40 children, as well as teachers and staff, were present when the one -floor roof collapsed.

According to NDTVThe building was in a dilapidated state and had been the subject of previous complaints. The school offers education to class 8.

“Instructions have been given to the authorities concerned to ensure an appropriate treatment for injured children,” said Rajasthan chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma, in a position on X.

Some of the injured children were in critical condition, confirmed local police officer Amit Kumar to PTI, Economic era reported.

“Four children died and 17 others injured. Ten children were referred to Jhalawar, three to four of whom are critical,” said Jhalawar police superintendent, Amit Kumar Pti.
