- The Hamr Hamr roadmap could offer hard drives of 150 TB – but not before 2035
- The Mozaic platform now allows 4 TB sets, opening the way for 10 TB discs by 2028
- Mozaic 4 to be shipped in 2026, while Mozaic 5 aims at the end of 2027
During the recent conference of Seagate investors and analysts in 2025, the CEO of Dr. Dave Mosley and CTO Dr. John Morris described the company’s long -term roadmap for the innovation of the hard drive.
This suggested the possibility of 150 TB hard drives, the The biggest hard drive of all time, by revolutionary plateaus of 15 TB, but warned that this step has remained at least a decade.
The basis of this future lies in HAMR (Heat-assisted magnetic recording) technology, currently deployed via the company Mozaic platform.
10 TB per tray on the right track for 2028
“We have great confidence in our product roadmap through Mozaic 5. And in particular, the design space for the Granular Iron Platinum media which is in Mozaic 3 seems very viable to bring us up to 10 teraoctets per disc,” said Dr. Morris
This reference of 10 TB per disc should be reached by 2028. “We have the confidence that we can provide a path to 10 teraoctets per disc in this time,” added Morris, explaining that spin-stand demonstrations of new technologies generally take five years to reach the qualification of products.
Looking beyond 10 TB, Seagate explores how to extend the capacities of its iron platinum media.
“We believe that there is another level of extension of this platinum granular architecture which could theoretically reach 15 teraoctets per disc”, “
Such an achievement would open the way to hard drives of 150 TB by stacking 10 trays per unit. However, he warned: “Beyond 15 teraoctets per disc, it will take a certain level of disruptive innovation”.
The CEO of Seagate, Dave Mosley, echoes this long-term vision, noting: “We now know how we can reach 4 and 5 and beyond. In fact, we have visibility … beyond 10 discs of disk with HAMR technology. ”
“It will not be easy, but I am convinced that it will keep us on a competitive cost trajectory that no other technology will replace during the next decade, probably beyond.”
The confidence of the company is supported by recent milestones. Mozaic 3, which offers 3 TB per plateau, is now in volume production, and Mozaic 4 (4 TB per plateau) is planned to enter the next quarter customer qualification.
Seagate plans to start the volume shipments of Mozaic 4 discs in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, Mozaic 5, targeting 5 TB per plateau, is planned for the qualification of customers at the end of 2027 or at the beginning of 2028.
However, Seagate clearly indicated that the 150 TB discs based on the 15 TB platforms are not imminent. As Morris pointed out, “this is only another element of the work we do to underlie our strategy … It will take time. There is still a lot of work in front of us to get there. ”
