Gene Hackman’s dog and Betsy Arakawa probably died of dehydration and famine.
A report from the veterinary laboratory of the US Ministry of Agriculture detailed partial mummification and also gave an overview of the dog’s death.
The report indicates that the stomach of the Kelpie mixture named Zinna, one of the couple’s three dogs, was mainly empty with the exception of small amounts of hair and bile, People magazine reported.
The other two dogs were tried in good health despite their rescued more than a week after the couple’s death in their apartment by Santa Fe, where actor Gene, 95, and Arakawa, 65, led a privacy.
The authorities confirmed last week that Hackman died of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease in February 2025 – about a week after the death of his wife, who had succumbed to a rare pulmonary syndrome of the rodents.
Hackman, in the advanced stages of Alzheimer, apparently ignored that his wife had died.
