Hikari, a Japanese filmmaker, made a new film entitled Rental familyThis reflects her experience when she moved to the United States at the age of 17.
While he was presented at first at the Toronto Film Festival, the director shares: “I came to America when I was 17 years old for the first time, and I landed in Utah.”
She continues: “It was my first place to learn English. I was the only Asian girl throughout the city, I felt like … I had to learn English and I had to learn culture.”
So, for the film, says Hikari, she reinvents her experience by exchanging herself with an American in Japanese society.
“So, for me, bringing someone – an American guy – to Tokyo, what is it like? Because there are a lot of things you learn when you are the only person in the room,” notes the director.
Brendan Fraser, who plays in the film, remembers having discussed the idea of the film with the filmmaker Hikari.
