- The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 received FCC approval
- A launch could now be imminent
- DJI is fighting to anticipate a ban next month
It looks like we might soon have a successor to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – which we described as “class-leading” in our review – now that a new DJI vlogging camera has hit the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Any gadget wanting to go on sale in the US must first get approval from the FCC, and as spotted by New Camera (via Notebookcheck), that’s now a done deal. This means that the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 could go on sale almost any day.
The FCC documentation doesn’t tell us much that’s exciting about the camera – it confirms that it will support Wi-Fi 5, for example, like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – but there will apparently be a battery capacity upgrade: from 1,300 mAh to 1,545 mAh.
We’ll have to wait and see what difference it makes to actual battery life when we get our hands on the DJI Osmo Pocket 4. Extra battery capacity is of course always welcome, but it’s just one of the factors that contribute to battery life.
An imminent ban in the United States
We’ve already seen leaked images of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which show a substantial redesign. This redesign could apparently include a second screen, which would also impact the average time between battery charges.
In addition to a second screen, rumors say that the upcoming gimbal device will also have a second camera. This would theoretically lead to higher quality photos and videos, as well as a wider range of shooting options.
All of this is happening under the threat of a ban on new DJI products in the United States, which is looking increasingly likely on Tuesday, December 23. A government agency security audit must take place before then for DJI to escape the ban.
DJI will want to launch the Osmo Pocket 4 before December 23 and the start of the ban – although at the moment it is unclear what powers the US government might have to retroactively ban products launched before that date.
